Ninja typically worked as farmers in peacetime. However, once a war broke out, they fought using their special weapons. There were also ninja who made their living as woodcutters and Yamabushi travelling monks. While taking severe ascetic practices, Yamabushi gained knowledge of medicinal plants and also collected information visiting various regions.
